Morgan, founder of Wellington Fund, the oldest member of what became The Vanguard Group. Morgan was friend and mentor to Vanguard founder John C. Bogle, and helped to shape the standards and business principles that Mr. Bogle laid down for Vanguard at its beginning nearly 25 years ago: a stress on balanced, diversified investments; insistence on fair dealing and candor with clients; and a focus on long-term investing.
To our great regret, Mr. Morgan died on September 2, 1998.
The 70th anniversary, on December 28, 1998, of the incorporation of Vanguard Wellington Fund. BOGLE Chairman & CEO Senior Chairman The U.S. Stock market staged a broad advance during the six months ended June 30. In this environment, Vanguard Extended Market Index Fund posted the highest return of the five Vanguard mid- and small-cap stock index funds, gaining +11.7%. Six-month total returns of our other funds ranged from +1.7% for the Small-Cap Growth Index Fund to +10.6% for the Small-Cap Index Fund.
For your reference, the S&P 500 Index, which is dominated by large-capitalization stocks, returned +12.4% for the period. The adjacent table shows the six-month total returns (capital change plus reinvested dividends) achieved by our funds, compared with the returns of their respective unmanaged index benchmarks. As you can see, the returns of all but the Small-Cap Growth Index Fund exceeded those of their target indexes.
